Surrounded by 1 hectare of gardens, this splendid historical estate has travelled through time. Since 1464, the villa was initially the hunting manor of Cardinal Silvio Passerini, and later became a convent for nuns. In the last two centuries it was operating as a tobacco and vine growing estate. Today the Hotel Villa di Piazzano and its lands are protected by the Environmental Authorities due to its historic importance.
The Wimpole family, originating from Australia, purchased the property in 1999 turning it into one of the most refined residences of central Italy. Of English origin, Mr Wimpole was born into a family of hoteliers. His great grandfather, Horatio Frederick Wimpole, left England to establish himself in Melbourne, Australia where he founded a grand hotel, furnished with antiques which he had brought from Europe. Today some of this furniture can be admired at the Hotel Villa di Piazzano, in particular a beautiful grandfather clock and an old photo depicting Horatio with his beard and moustache, as was the fashion of that time.
The guests at Hotel Villa di Piazzano will be overcome by the serenity of the area, which retains its greenness even during the August heat thanks to its tree-lined avenues and extensive tobacco plantations which, after centuries, still enhance the landscape. The structure of the Hotel Villa di Piazzano of Cortona is a marvellous example of the Italian style which is particularly appreciated by Anglo Saxons. The simple noble façade articulated by grey stone work in ‘pietra serena’ features sixteenth century doorways which open into a homely entrance hall and living room. In every corner one is reminded of the local atmosphere by terracotta floors, fireplaces in the sitting room, bar and dining room, along with furniture, lamps and prints of other times, which have been collected by the Wimpole family in their travels around the world.
A gracious circular staircase leads to the first floor reading room which has an impressive ceiling supported by exposed wooden beams. Even in the 15 guest rooms, each one different from the other, one can sense the Wimpoles’ passion and care for detail, which has been maximised in this enchanting place. Wood and terracotta are dominant features in every room, as well as exposed beams, antique furniture, and even an antique cot where many of the earlier Wimpoles had spent their nights. In the Cardinal’s room, on the first floor, a magnificent frescoed ceiling in the shades of pink adorns the ceiling. It is the only room in the Hotel Villa di Piazzano with a fresco, but each one has its own identity starting from the name. “Tramonto Toscano” (Tuscan Sunset), for example, has a wooden beamed sloping ceiling and overlooks the Italian garden which enjoys the most beautiful sunsets.
A walk through the garden, amongst the century old Italian oaks, linden trees and cypresses, allows one to loose track of time. The scent of the garden accompanies the ritual of the aperitif, after a swim in the Villa’s large pool. This is but a pleasant pause, before sitting at the dinner table where the palate is tempted by the kitchen’s specialities, prepared under the careful supervision of the Signora Adriana. The cuisine focuses on Italian and Cortona, dishes with a tendency towards the local Umbrian and Tuscan traditions: roasts, fresh pasta, typical pâtés and many vegetables which still grow wild in the country side, mushrooms and salame. It is a feast to the palate culminating in the difficult choice of dessert.
It is not easy to depart from this oasis of peace and return to everyday life. It is for this reason that the Hotel Villa di Piazzano can count on many regular guests who return whenever they can, to enjoy the Villa’s proximity to some of the most beautiful sites in Italy, as well as the most famous road through the vineyards of the Brunello di Montalcino. Una scenografia sorprendente per 46 espositori
Una mostra che guarda al mercato internazionale partendo da una scelta fatta nelle regioni italiane più ricche e interessanti quanto a mercato antiquariale. In totale più di 800 pezzi importanti e poi tanti piccoli oggetti da collezione presentati da 46 espositori: mobili italiani e dipinti dal Seicento all’Ottocento, sculture lignee del ‘400, mobili orientali con antiquariato tibetano e cinese, argenti e bronzi, avori e giade, ventagli e pizzi, gioielli. La mostra presenta degli aspetti scenografici fantastici che culminano in un vero e proprio giardino antiquario con tanto di manto erboso a terra, una sontuosa fontana d’epoca con giochi d’acqua e luce, sedili in pietra e altri arredi da giardino, rigorosamente autentici. Molti i segnali di nuove tendenze e orientamenti di stile destinati a connotare il mercato antiquario del prossimo autunno, quando torna la voglia di stare in casa, tanto più se circondati da oggetti che abbiano il fascino di storie importanti e lontane nel tempo.
Dormire nell’abbraccio della Villa di Piazzano, a 5 chilometri da Cortona
Soggiornare in questa bella dimora sullo sfondo delle dolci colline toscane, a cinque chilometri da Cortona, è come vivere un pezzo di storia. La Villa di Piazzano si staglia sul verde con le sue linee semplici e nette. La parte più antica porta incisa su un mattone la data del 1464, mentre l’ampliamento è stato compiuto nel 1693. Oggi, sia la proprietà e il parco circostante sono sotto la protezione della Soprintendenza ai Beni Ambientali. La Villa, che fa parte di un piccolo borgo, appartiene da cinque anni alla famiglia Wimpole: il padre, diplomatico australiano adesso in pensione, la signora Adriana e la figlia Alessandra. L’albergo è raccolto in una sola costruzione ed è arredato in modo fantasioso ed eclettico; i pavimenti sono in cotto e l’atmosfera è resa ancor più calda e intima da tre grandi camini. In una stanza c’è un lettino d’epoca in cui hanno dormito tutti i bambini della famiglia Wimpole. Dove prima c’era un terreno agricolo, adesso sono 10.000 mq. di parco, con un bellissimo giardino all’italiana, una grande piscina di 15 metri per 8, un viale di cipressi e uno di tigli.
Le 15 camere, diverse una dall’altra, hanno un nome. Quasi tutte hanno soffitti a travi , una sola, la Stanza del Cardinale, ha la volta interamente affrescata nei toni del rosa. Una junior suite, Tramonto toscano, ha un letto a baldacchino con una struttura leggera, quasi fosse sospesa, con una finestra da cui si gode il suggestivo calar del sole sul giardino all’italiana. Si trova al piano di sopra la suite La Colombaia, composta da una camera da letto e da un salotto con divano letto e grande finestra che guarda sul verde e i cipressi della campagna toscana.
Le gite: il lago, il vino e le colline
Dalla Villa di Piazzano si possono fare molte belle passeggiate sui sentieri che, in meno di un’ora, portano in cima alle colline splendidamente affacciate sul Lago Trasimeno; o si possono affittare biciclette per andare a fare escursioni e picnic. Si possono fare giri classici in auto, anche accompagnati da una guida, per esempio sulla Strada del Vino (Montepulciano, Pienza, Montalcino, Sant’Antimo), con degustazioni nelle cantine. Tanti sono i prodotti tipici offerti della zona: vini, olio extra vergine d’oliva, tartufi, funghi.
Come arrivare
Alla Villa di Piazzano si arriva facilmente in auto dall’autostrada A1 Roma-Firenze (uscita Bettolle-Val di Chiana), poi seguendo la superstrada per Perugia fino a Castiglion del Lago, da dove mancano pochi chilometri.

This was our second visit and everything was just as beautiful as we remembered. It's not just the wonderful villa and the beautiful grounds that make this such a perfect escape, but also the lovely Wimpole family and all the fantastic staff.
Everybody, without exception, was so helpful and friendly and it is obvious they really care about the Villa and their guests. The food is excellent and there is nothing better than having a meal on the terrace in the evening. I wish I was there now!
The pool is lovely and even though we were there at one of their busiest times, it was never crowded. You can also get snacks by the pool but unfortunately we never had the chance this time.
It is a short drive or taxi ride (10-15 mins) into Cortona but the villa is very well placed for plenty of day trips and you can find useful recommendations in a helpful information book in your room. There are also plenty of great books to browse through and borrow.
We can't wait to return and have not yet found anywhere else quite as special.
